Marc Garneau called upon to urgently halt the project and to implement the NAV Canada Protocol

Les Pollués de Montréal-Trudeau are urging the Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, to halt the start of work aimed at reducing the capacity of one of the two main runways at Montreal-Trudeau Airport, which will change how these runways are used for aircraft landing or taking off. They demand that the Minister forces NAV Canada and Aeroports de Montreal (ADM) to respect the specific Protocol that was created by his ministry last year in conjunction with the Council of Canadian Airports. This Protocol provides for public consultations when managers of airports and Canadian airspace intend to make changes to flights over areas neighbouring these transport infrastructures.

ADM wants to restrict one of the two main runways to propeller aircraft only, in order to concentrate the flights of large aircraft to the second runway. This will generate even more noise pollution for a large section of the population already overwhelmed by this nuisance.

The work is scheduled to begin this Saturday, July 23. “It is urgent that the Minister acts, as by his inactivity since his appointment as Minister, he has allowed complete freedom of action to NAV Canada and ADM” criticises Antoine Bécotte, President of the citizens’ committee.
