Projet Montreal, an opposition party at Montreal Town Hall, held a press briefing on September 15, 2015 to announce that it would file a motion on the issue of nuisance caused by aircraft noise at the council meeting of September 21, 2015.
“We hope that the Council will speak with one voice to ask Aeroports de Montreal (ADM) to improve its practices for disclosing information. ADM has placed noise measuring devices around Montreal-Trudeau Airport and in different areas of the island of Montreal, but the airport authority does not make public in real time the noise level data it measures, and contents itself with publishing a soundscape once a year, which is far from being enough, “said Émilie Thuillier, Ahuntsic city councilor and spokesperson for the Montreal Airports file.

In its motion, Projet Montreal not only demands more transparency from ADM, but also more noise measuring stations in the Montreal area. We know that ADM has never installed fixed noise measuring stations east of Vieux Saint-Laurent. The Ahuntsic-Cartierville boroughs, Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension and the Town of Mount Royal, among others, do not have any noise measuring stations belonging to the manager of the Montreal-Trudeau Airport.

Projet Montreal believes ADM should take inspiration from airports like Heathrow in London, which makes public data measuring noise levels in real time, as well as radar tracks of aircraft.

“Since noise measuring devices installed by the DSP near the Montreal-Trudeau Airport have recorded noise levels exceeding those recommended by the World Health Organization, we believe that ADM has to give us the facts and publicize the real-time data it collects concerning noise caused by aircraft, “said Émilie Thuillier, who was accompanied at her press briefing by Sylvain Ouellet, city councilor of François-Perrault and spokesperson for Projet Montreal on environmental matters.
